Nicolas Beatrizet was born in Luneville (in France, Lorraine region) in 1507 or perhaps earlier. From his style it was assumed that he was a scholar of Ghisi and Agostino Veneziano de Musis. Around 1540 he moved to Rome and until 1560 he engraved under the direction of Michelangelo.
According to various scholars, the importance of the works of Beatrizet (later called Beatricetto in Italy) lies in the fact that several of them are drawn from scenes painted by some of the greatest artists of his time, including Michelangelo. The mastery of Beatricetto therefore lies in knowing how to graphically reproduce the scenes of large paintings such as this one, which refers to Michelangelo's Last Judgment, made a few decades earlier on the vertical wall of the Sistine Chapel on a small table.
The panel proposed here, datable to 1562, is one of the nine engraved sheets with which Beatrizet graphically created Michelangelo's Last Judgment. It is possible that Michelangelo himself saw and approved the graphic creation of Beatricetto who, at this point, can be considered a pupil and follower of him.
