Il tubo di Torricelli o barometro di Torricelli, dal nome del suo inventore, Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), fu il primo strumento di misura progettato appositamente per misurare la pressione atmosferica. Consiste in un tubo di vetro chiuso da un lato e aperto dall'altro, con una sezione di un centimetro quadrato (la sezione del tubo non ha importanza, basta che non sia un capillare e che ci sia abbastanza liquido per riempire il tubo all'altezza opportuna) lungo un metro, riempito di mercurio, posto in un vassoio, anch'esso contenente mercurio, in modo da creare un sistema di vasi comunicanti. La scelta di questo elemento è data dalla sua elevata densità, che permette di lavorare ad alte pressioni con volumi relativamente contenuti.

The Torricelli tube or Torricelli barometer, named after its inventor, Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), was the first measuring instrument specially designed to measure atmospheric pressure. It consists of a glass tube closed on one side and open on the other, with a section of one square centimeter (the section of the tube does not matter, as long as it is not a capillary and there is enough liquid to fill the tube inside appropriate height) one meter long, filled with mercury, placed in a tray, also containing mercury, so as to create a system of communicating vessels. The choice of this element is given by its high density, which allows you to work at high pressures with relatively small volumes.
